Just some thoughts:
THEY ARE O AND 6
“Adamson they are 0 and 6 why do you go to their games?”
A fella said that to me the other day. He was talking about a small college basketball team whose games I go to. “Their a bunch of losers.” When he said that I corrected him. “No, they are a basketball team that is yet to win a game but for sure they are not a bunch of losers.”
I go to a lot of basketball games each year. Like a lot of things in life one often sees things differently as they age. Basketball, sports is one of them. I grew up in Indiana. I love basketball. Saw my first game when I was seven years old. (Russ Moore player I remember) Tiny gym, walls so close they had pads under neath the baskets to keep players from killing themselves should they drive hard to the basket. Home of the Pimento Peppers.
I loved basketball in my earliest days for reasons which I can’t always explain but for some different reasons than today. In my early days I loved the game for purely what it was, trying to put a ball thru a small cylinder. How you could work as a team, figure out plays, defenses, etc. I played cause one wanted to win, which by the way any team I ever played on seldom did.
Over the years my love for the game did not leave but it refocused. It changed in some ways. I came to love and appreciate the game for what it did and could do for one. I went to college for one reason, basketball. No, not as a player but I wanted to be a coach, and to coach you had to go to college. So with little thought or planning that is what I did. Lived at home, worked full-time and went to the local college.
But over time and more so in years later I came to love and appreciate the game for what it did and could do for people. Basketball teaches life. One of the values of sports and competition is it does teach about life. When you are a kid you don’t think in those terms. But it teaches you about losing, disappointment, what it is to “win” and “lose.” It puts you in situations that you are not comfortable, puts you before people, crowds and they are not always nice or supportive. Again like life.
So the team is 0 and 6, they play twice this coming week and I plan to be there in support and to watch kids not only playing a game but learning about life. I would never associate the word “loser” with people who participate.
Well tonight I saw that 0 and 6 team play a team from Alabama. They now are 0 and 7. But you know….. still they are not “losers.” I will be at the next game.
