Just some thoughts:
Once upon a time a high school principle in small town Indiana, in trying to replace the vacancy of the town’s high school basketball coach, said to his school’s superintendent:
“Do we want a high class gentleman who’ll be a pillar of the community?Or do we want a guy who’s going to win basketball games?”
One Small Town, One Crazy Coach–Mike Roos
Oh, come on, anyone with Indiana roots knows the answer to that question. Right?
The answer, you guessed it, forget that business about a gentleman and pillars in the community. The crazy coach that was hired once during a game took off his pants and tossed them into the crowd.
“If we win the Sectional, who knows what I might do. I might just go crazy and take off my damn pants and throw’em into the crowd.” Quoted Pete Gill coach of the Ireland Spuds. And that’s what he did.
In 1963 I sat in stands at Robert’s Memorial Stadium in Evansville, Indiana and watched as the Ireland Spuds played in the Indiana semi-state (Sweet Sixteen) basketball tournament. It was a treat.
If you like basketball and stories about small town life I highly recommend the book published in 2015 by Mike Roos, One Small Town, One Crazy Coach.
Personally I found it hard to put down.
