Just some thoughts:
In our recent trip one of the countries we visited was Germany. And one of the most interesting days I found was a visit to Wittenberg, Germany and the findings of the religious reformer Martin Luther.
So many things of interest about Luther.
*I liked this one. He said a minister should speak no longer than sixty minutes. If he could not get it said in that time then he had too much or nothing to say. Today most of us would not like sitting even for sixty minutes and listening to a minister speak. “Hey fella, get it said in about twenty thirty minutes at the most. We gotta go eat.”
* He said “If the Bible does not say it, “reference it” then it is of man and not God. (This is where he took issue with the matter of ministers/priest and marriage.) He did marry a young lady about fifteen years younger than him. Had six children and his wife was a very well respected lady of the community. We visited both their graves while traveling.
*On the matter of indulgences this is where early he ran afoul of the church fathers. For example paying for the sin of adultery cost one more than murder. Reason, indulgences was a matter of money for the church. Hey adultery was more common than murder so “pay up.” No this is true.
* On the matter of indulgences Luther’s position was one should repent of sins..not pay money.
*Said all sermons, all speakers should speak in the language of the people, not just Latin.
* He was a very strong believer in the Ten Commandments. He did not believe in “Cafeteria Commandments.” In other words, choose the ones you like forget the ones you don’t.
* He was the first to put the New Testament, doing so in six weeks, into the Germany language. Doing like wise with the Bible, this taking about twelve years to complete. That’s sittin’ with pen in hand for a long time.
# Speak message grounded in scripture. Sermons are not a lecture. After doing some further reading on him it is my take Luther’s preaching would have been more of “Hey I got good news for you,” rather “Hey fella you best shape up or you are going to _____.”He spoke from the position of positive rather negative. I like that approach.
#Worship not merely a preaching matter. Should be response in prayer, praise and music.“I have no use for cranks who despise music, it is a gift from God.”
#Believed strongly in the training of the youth.
#Youth is tempted by the flesh, adults by the world.
#Said of his wife and I like this quote : “He liked it when woke to pigtails on the pillow next to his.” You can see this guy was well ahead of his day and a bit of a puzzle for church leaders at this time.
Of the ninety some changes he tact on the door, eight seven later would be accepted by the church and put into practice.
A most interesting man for a most interesting time in religious history.
