Just some thoughts:
“I BET YOU”
“Buster you think you’re something.”
Alvin Thomas once said that standing in the lobby of a resort hotel in French Lick, Indiana.
He said that to a famous professional boxer. “You’re not so tough, I got a thousand dollars that says you couldn’t knock me down if we were standing on the same newspaper.” The boxer’s reply: “I’ll take that bet, put up or shut up.”
That bet was made with a number of other by-standers who had heard the bet jumping in with some of their money and getting some action on the bet. All the pigeons began to line up.
Mr.Thomas rustled up a copy of the Spring Valley Herald from the hotel front desk. He then took the newspaper spreading it over the threshold of the dining room door. He then invited the boxer to stand on one page. Now he and the boxer were almost nose to nose stand on the paper. With that Mr.Thomas (Titanic Thompson) took a step back, shut the door between them and stepped onto the paper again.
Less than an hour later found Titanic with a couple thousand dollars in his pockets making a rather hurried exit from French Lick, Indiana. Driving on a blacktop road passing the cornfields north of Floyds Knobs. Often checking his rear view mirror for anyone that might be following him.
You know it might be best before making bets to get full disclosure of the bet. You should have heard about the one he made: “I bet I can throw a watermelon over that hotel.” And he did.
