Just some thoughts:
Or it sure appears to me he does.
I first met Vince Gill forty plus years ago at a small county fair he was playing in Pennsylvania. From that meeting we and some others where I worked (United States Golf Association) would see that he got access to certain golf courses as he would come East to play various music venues. At that time he had a song or two with some success but certainly was nothing fame wise as he would later become.
Since retiring and coming to live in Nashville I have worked as a volunteer at his Vinny golf outing which raises funds for junior golf here in Tennessee. A great program. One of the things I marvel at regarding Vince is how he remembers names, I will see him at the Vinny or often at a Belmont basketball game. He always speaks and calls me by name. How he does that with all the thousands of people he has met is amazing to me.
So often when I see him I recall something he once said to a reporter who was interviewing him about his life and career. It is something I have found myself now saying to our twenty year old granddaughter who is a junior in college.
“Life is going to lead you more than you’re going to lead it.
You are going to react to life more than plan it.”
Sometime back I was sitting over coffee with her and found myself saying something like: “Honey, don’t worry too much, just go to school, get yourself a college degree and let the rest come to you.”
You know that has pretty much been my experience….life comes more to you than you to it….and then you just react and figure out what you need to do as best you know how.
