Just some thoughts:
GIVE THEM SOMETHING (GOOD) TO REMEMBER
I love harnessing race.
If all goes as plan next week I will be in Indiana (Frankfort) at a county fair for two nights of harnessing racing. Golf in the day and the fair that night.
Last night my wife and I sat in the yard of our youngest daughter and watched as our son-in-law and others, most certainly the kids, fired off fireworks. A bunch. Loud and pretty. I think it has kinda become a family tradition for her family to do such on the 4th. Grilling out, cake and ice cream the whole works.
But as I sat there watching the kids, jumping, running, yelling just enjoying the activities I thought “They are doing more than just shooting off fireworks.” They are making a memory for their kids, their family. A good memory. A family memory.
When I was a young kid every year my mom and dad went to the state fair in Indianapolis. It was a big deal for this teenage boy. It was one of the first times that I would be “let loose” for a while from the family. “Ok it’s ten o’clock you meet us in front of the stands at one. You hear? Don’t you be late. Racing starts at two and we want to be in the stands early.” And off into the unknown world I would go. It was a big deal for a young teenage boy.
But you know my dad did more for me than just taking me to the state fair and an afternoon harnessing racing that he loved. Yes he created a love for a sport that remains with me today, but more importantly, he gave me good memories of my family, mom my dad and I. I can see my dad looking over the horses, talking about them as they warmed up. I still remember the name, Del Miller as he was a driver of some reputation. My dad would say, “If he in the sulky you can count on him.”
P.S.One time I did convince him to stay that evening after the harness racing. You see it was Joie Chitwood and his “Hell Drivers.” I think he enjoyed it as much as I did. I saw him laugh and clap a few times. Mom cut out, in fact she scowled me when I referenced “Hell Drivers.” She went to the “Cake and pie bake off, I guess.
Good memories—— years later they often can carry one.
