Just some thoughts:
Remember when you were a kid and you wanted to do something so your plea to your parents was,”Everybody’s doing it.” “Everybody’s going, everybody gets to do it but me.”
More often than not the come back you would hear was, “Well if everyone jumped off a bridge would you?” So often you wanted to do something so badly that you would almost answered with a resounding, “Yes.”
Well its true that just because someone else is doing such and such that is not always a good reason another should.
But I got another thought for you. How about the matter of doing it cause…… no one else “Is” doing it?
In January of 1982 on a snowy, blizzard type day in Washington, D.C. a Air Florida Flight 90 plane struck the 14th Street Bridge and went down into the Potomac River. Hundreds of on lookers stood on the bridge and watched the chaos. In the cold waters below a lady, Priscilla Tirado was struggling. She was in shock, in the mist of jet fuel and could not reach the rescue rings being thrown to those in the water. Twenty-eight year old Lenny Shutnik was one of those standing on the bridge watching when the next thing the crowd noticed he jumped from the bridge into the water. Quickly he went to the lady and pulled her from the freezing water, pulled her to shore and safety.
Later when Lenny was honored at the White House, he was asked by reporters “Why did you jump from the bridge into the icy waters?” He gave a very straight and simple answer. He did so as in his words, “No one else was doing anything, so I did.”
You know in life while we often want to do something cause someone else is doing it sometimes we also don’t want to do something cause “no one else is doing it.”
How about being the one who walks over to the new kid in the cafeteria and says, “Hey you wanna sit with us?” It is apparent that no one else is doing it. How about being the one that goes to family that has just moved in the neighborhood and welcomes them to the area and offers help? How about being the one calling that person who has lost their spouse and ask, “Would you like to go to lunch with me or meet me for a cup of coffee.”
How about being the one that just gives a smile and an acknowledgment to someone you meet first thing in the morning? How about asking the one that is seldom asked, “Hey you wanna?” After all not everyone’s doing it. How about just paying attention to life happenings around us and just doing something cause no one else is doing it?
Get the picture? How about being the one that is doing it cause no one else “IS.”
