Just some thoughts:
Recently a piece appeared on my blog regarding my seeing Buddy Holly back in 1958 at Buck Lake.
Buck Lake Ranch was located just outside of Angola in the northeast corner of Indiana. That writing sparked some interest and contacts with me regarding the place. Buck Lake was an outdoor venue said to be able to hold up to 10,000 if needed. That sounds a bit of a stretch but who knows.
Buck Lake probably dates back into the late 1940s’. I once remember talking with Little Jimmy Dickens and he talked about appearing there at least in the early 1950s’.
Just about every type of entertainment in one form of another appeared there. Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Louie Armstrong, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and the list is endless. I’d bet even a couple dancin’ bears and a jitterbugging elephant played there at one time.
One of the most interesting of time at Buck Ranch was when professional wrestling took place. Now can you imagine an outdoor venue say on a hot summer night or a Sunday afternoon and with some of the crazies that show up with a stronger belief that wresting is real than they believe the scriptures.
“The wrestlers were really a different breed. A number of them six or seven arrived in two cars together and would joke around as they went to the dressing rooms. An hour late they were out in the ring supposedly tearing one another apart. After the matches back into the cars and drive away together.”
“Why I saw Yukon Eric get his ear bitten off. Not once but twice in the same day. Actually I think the best show was the fans and how they would react. From time to time some scrawny guy would make a move toward the ring during the match when his guy was getting “pummeled,” to help him out. Often a fan would get tackled by a security guy at least once a match.”
As Hallie Beck (old gal that wrote a weekly news column about happenings in Pimento for the Farmersbug weekly paper) would always say in closing her column, “A good time was had by all.”
Well I bet that could be said by many folks leaving Buck Lake Ranch over the many years it was in operation:
“A good time was had by all.”
