Just some thoughts:
A meat and three is a restaurant where one can order a meat from generally a selection of two or three meats and side orders from a selection of five or six items. In the South that would include bread often corn bread and certainly tea, sweet by all means. Oh my sweet tea.
I like such places for more reason that just the cuisine. I frequent them every chance I get. Especially when Mrs. Adamson is not along. You can fine such fine dinning in garden spots like Fayvetteville, Hohenwald, Centerville, Smithville, Crossville, Eagleville, Tennessee….I got a few more.
Last summer when my wife and I were on our 6000 mile three week car trip out west I would look for such places. Often I would drive off the beaten path (highway) to find such. One place in small town Texas (home of Waylon Jennings) we stopped to which my wife said, “Why here, this place kinda looks kinda questionable.” Shame on her. I told her, take a look at all the pick-up trucks in the parking lot and there are some chairs on the porch of the place. Also, a couple old dogs laying there. It proved to be one of the best places (even she agreed) we ate all during our trip. Even two choices of home made cobbler, black berry or peach, with a scoop of ice cream. It rivaled my grandmother’s and that’s saying a bunch.
Recently I was in a small town in southern Tennessee. I had some time on my hands before going to the harness races at the county fair. I ventured into this “meat and three,” Mona’s cafe right there on the square. Walking in I knew I had made a good choice as the daily specials were spelled out for the customer on a black board. Also a lady greeted me, “Honey, you just sit yourself down and I’ll be with you in a minute.”
At the top of the black board listing the menu of the day I read:
“Do the dull things right so the extraordinary
things will not be required too often.”
Pretty scholarly stuff wouldn’t you say for the meat and three crowd? You don’t get that kind of wisdom at just any place.
