“WHAT’S THIS FOR?”

June 13, 2020 By Larry Adamson Leave a Comment

Just some thoughts:

                                ” A ROSE AND A BABY RUTH”

A Rose And A BabyRuth Photograph by Tom Zukauskas

“What’s this for?”

Often I will just get in my old Corvette and take off. Often just go out in the country for a drive. With all that has and is happening now in our country seems I’m more inclined to do such. Kinda like ole Thoreau, “Hey mom I gotta go to the woods.”
George Hamilton IV...."A Rose And A Baby Ruth"....Sheet Music ...

As I was driving last night a song came on my car’s cassette player. Yes cassette. A song by the late George Hamilton IV. A hit in the 1950s’. “A Rose and a Baby Ruth.”  Seems this fella wanted to say something to his girlfriend, kinda an apology and he didn’t know or have much money for a real expensive gift. So to do such he bought her a rose and a candy bar, a Baby Ruth.

As I drove home that night I pulled into Publix in my neighborhood. I went in and bought some flowers and a Hershey chocolate bar. When I got home I took the flowers, the candy bar and put them on the counter in our kitchen. Left them there.
Giant Hershey Milk Chocolate Bars - 12ct | CandyStore.comA bit later my wife walks in the kitchen and says, “What’s this, flowers and a chocolate bar?” I looked at her and said well its kinda an apology. “Apology for what?” The past few days have kinda been frustrating for me with some personal matters that have bothered me.  I said to her, “Well its kinda like an apology for ‘I’m sorry not being the kinda of guy I want to be.” Not that I had been a “really bad” guy. We had not argued nothing really other than plain and simple,”I had just not been the kinda of guy I want to be.” She smiled.

“So here is my “Rose and a Baby Ruth” to you I’ll try and get myself in a better frame of mind.”  She was familiar with the song.

(P.S. Will you split the Hershey bar with me?)

By the way you got anyone in your life that maybe they too are deserving of a “Rose and a Baby Ruth” from you?

FUNDAMENTALS

June 11, 2020 By Larry Adamson Leave a Comment

Just some thoughts:

                                     FUNDAMENTALS

Fundamentals–A central or primary rule or principle on which something is based.

This morning as I pulled from my drive in my old car headed to my coffee place I slipped in a cd. Just prior to this cd I had been listening to Roy Acuff and his Smoky Mountains Boys. “The Wabash Cannonball.”   Now I was playing Jimmy Durante. OK..yes quite a shift.

An Image Of A Nice Clock With Time Goes By Stock Photo, Picture ...

There is a great line in an old Durante song, “The fundamental things apply as time goes by.” As I drove along I hung on that line. Fundamentals. Some things that are certain, a given. Things that have stood the test of time. Principles that were once true and remain so, regardless of time and place.
I thought of my six grand kids and now two great grand kids. I hope they learn or are learning the “fundamentals” of life. I equally hope as their grandparents, three and four generations before them, we are helping in that learning process.

How Children Learn by Observing Behavior of Adults | LoveToKnow
Things like honesty, integrity, compassion, fairness, treatment of all people. Fundamentals in ever phase of ones life are surely needed. Learning what is important. Always be able to see the “Big Picture.” Stealing a line from my old grandma, “Never throw the baby out with the bath water.”

                                     Moonlight and love songs–
hey should never be out of date.”

Fundamentals…..important.

I MISSED IT

                    JUST SOME THOUGHTS:

33 Basketball Terms Every Kid Should Know | ACTIVEkids
                                                   I MISSED IT

Summer time is here and that will see a lot of folks at ball fields.  Often today it is hard for me to sit and watch what goes on at some of the ball fields of small children. T-ball, soccer games, etc. Hard for me to listen and watch some folks in some cases parents and even coaches (not all) but too many yelling at kids.  Kids that are just seven, eight maybe nine years old. Recently after leaving a ball field I said to my wife, “I’m glad my parents did not yell at  me when I played ball.” My parents rarely missed a game I played but never do I remember hearing their voices yelling from the stands. Another summer is upon us lets all think twice before we “yell.”

“I Missed It” is something I wrote about four years ago after being at a ball field.  They never missed a game but they never yelled:

“Some of the strongest lessons can sometimes be said in silence.”

Just some thoughts:

I MISSED IT

What is one of the worst things that can happen to you? Sorry, that is a loaded question, I agree.

If you were in your teens living in Indiana and playing high school basketball, I can give you an answer. I once experienced it. It happened on a basketball court. The year was 1960,and I still remember the town and much of the particulars.  It was a cold winter Friday night.  (By the way being a teen in Indiana in the late 50s’, Friday and Saturday nights were the best, unmatchable.)

Looking back today I can smile, in fact, take comfort and encouragement from what happened on that night, but it wasn’t easy at the time. What happened off the court was even more important than what happened on the court that night.

It was the 4th quarter of the game, very late in the game, our team was down by 1 point.  I stole the ball, intercepted a pass, and was off like lightning (well that is a bit of an overstatement, but it reads better). I broke for my teams basket at the other end of the court. I’ll cut to the chase. I was well out in front and took off to the basket about a half a step too soon. I missed the lay up. We lost the game and I felt horrible.  I am sure I said, “I lost the game.” My coach and teammates did not hold that missed lay up accountable to our loss, but I did.

Much later that night I came home from the long ride on that yellow chariot (school bus)and walked into the kitchen of our little four room house. My dad was still up sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper and drinking a cup of day-old coffee. (How could they drink that stuff, old coffee?)  He said to me as I stepped in the doorway of the kitchen, “Sit down.” What he next said to me is something I carry with me still to this day. “I know you feel bad about missing the basket, but your mom and I are proud of you. We felt bad for you, but you did not lose the game. Now, go hang your suit up. We’re proud of you.  I think you have another game tomorrow night.” With that, I hung up my suit and we all went to bed.

How we all handle our “missed baskets” in life and equally important how those around us choose to help us handle them is so, so important. Especially to a young person.

A KISS TO BUILD A DREAM ON

June 9, 2020 By Larry Adamson Leave a Comment

Just some thoughts:

“A KISS TO BUILD A DREAM ON”

Rock superstar Rod Stewart cuts shows on Las Vegas Strip | Las ...

I like Rod Stewart. Some years ago Stewart recorded a series of songs of great American standards. “The Great American Songbook,” volume whatever. Actually I think in all there might have been  five volumes of recordings along with the best of the series. Great late night music. (For some reason Stewart and professional golfer Ian Poulter remind me off one another.)
File:32166 Albemarle County School Bus Road-e-o.jpg - Wikimedia ...
I have liked Stewart from many years ago. There is especially one night that I remember Stewart. It goes back to the years when I was teaching and coaching. When the basketball team went on the road to play the team bus was what we came to call, “The Yellow Chariot.” Yellow school bus. If you saw the movie “Hoosiers” try to recall the scene where the team is on the bus going to a game. Yellow chariots, they could be freezing cold, wind effected, slick roads and snow could rock the best of them. And if you lost it could be one of the longest and most miserable rides imaginable. But if you won, now that was another story.
Covington Basketball (@Covington_BB) | Twitter
I remember one night we had a road game I think it was in Covington. Covington, Indiana was a river town and always a tough place to play. The gym and the locker room was at the heat level of a sauna. Satan himself stoked the furnace. The noise level with their cheer block could sound like 25,000 people. On a positive note, they did have the best popcorn of any high school game in the state.
Well for some unknown reason on this night the team played well. Very well, really well and they won.  Again not an easy feat at that place.
SIR ROD STEWART
As we boarded the bus and headed home the bus driver was told “turn that radio on.” About halfway into our journey home Steward came on the radio. One of the kids from the back of bus yelled, “Turn that baby up.” So on this cold Indiana winter night we had a bus load of basketball players/ managers and  two coaches  singing at the top of their lungs with Ole Rod, The song I’ve never forgotten was —“Hot Legs.”
Little Boy Kisses the Girl Stock Footage Video (100% Royalty-free ...Little Girl Kisses the Boy Stock Footage Video (100% Royalty-free ...
As I sit her tonight playing some Stewart it is a little milder, calmer song but one with a great title, “A Kiss To Build A Dream On.” It’s for sure many a dream has been created with that very thing, a kiss. But I will never forget that night riding in a yellow chariot on a very cold Indiana winter night….. we all sang another Stewart song. Folks, today I’d pay good money for one more ride on a cold February Indiana winter night on that yellow chariot.
“A Kiss To Build A Dream On.” Now there’s a great thought–regardless of time, space or age.

GRADUATION

June 7, 2020 By Larry Adamson Leave a Comment

Just some thoughts:

                                            GRADUATION

In recent weeks the lives of all of us have been changed in many ways. One of them is the matter of graduations. Kindergarten, middle school, junior high, high school, college. Unfortunately many  did not get the normal opportunities for celebration with family and friends.

Kindergarten Graduation and End-of-the-Year Ideas! | Scholastic

So to each and everyone who was graduating, congratulations. Let me also steal a line from someone else. This past year I was fortunate to be in winning team’s  dressing room after a college game. The team had played extremely well, pulled an upset.  I so well remember what the coach said to his team. He praised them, spoke well of each of them and then the last thing he said “Guys as you leave here and go out into the public–wear this victory well.” So to all graduates wear your deserved recognition well.

                                    “Capture the Moment”

We’ll take a picture, to capture the moment
we’ll hold it tight within our grasp, it won’t last
Time is moving swiftly forward, before we know it, you’ll be
grown, on your own. But where ever life takes you, wherever
you roam, not matter how long or how far away you go
                            You can always come home.

May the sad times and the heartaches, pass so quickly to
                          brighter days, along the way.
But when your heart is breaking
and you don’t know what to do and  you  just need some
comfort and someone to see you through,
                                  You can always come home.

May your journey be filled with sunshine, amazing joy along
the way, every day. Your great adventure is just beginning
so much promise held in store, an open door
But wherever life takes you or wherever you roam,
no matter how long or how far you go,
                                   You can always come home

We want to be your safe place to fall, your soft place to land.
We promise to listen and try to understand. We might
not say, “you’re right,” we might even say, “you’re wrong,”
But whether you’re right or wrong our open arms are
here for you, our whole life long.

Take a picture, capture the moment.

This song was written by a music teacher here in Williamson County, Tennessee, Mrs. Shelley Exler. I first heard the song a few years back at one of our grand kids graduations. I thought the song spoke so well to the emotions of such an event. Someone to listen, they may not agree, they may even tell you so, but you are welcome you can always come home.

So graduates, again congratulations. Wear it well.

We might not say “you’re right,” we might even say “you’re wrong” but the bottom line, you can always come home.

HOW’S YOUR JUNE THE 5TH?

June 4, 2020 By Larry Adamson Leave a Comment

Just some thoughts:

“HOW’S YOUR JUNE THE 5th GONE?”

The Mighty Fifteen - The American Contingent Flying to Normandy ...

“The pilots started their engines. A giant cacophony of sound engulfed the airfield at each C-47 in its turn lurched into line of the taxi strip. A the head of the runway, the pilots locked the brakes and ran up the engines until they screamed. Then, at ten-second intervals, they released the brakes and started down the runway, slowly at first, gathering speed, so overloaded that they barely made it into the sky.”

FRIENDSHIP

June 1, 2020 By Larry Adamson Leave a Comment

Just some thoughts:

                                          FRIENDSHIP

Years ago as a teenager I remember standing outside the Fidler-Woods funeral home in Farmersburg, Indiana.

49 Best The Meaning Of Friendship images | Friendship, Friendship ...

I was standing around a bunch of the “old” men who had gathered outside havin’ a smoke. They were there to pay their respects to a very good friend of each of them and a friend to the community who had died. As a young boy I remember one of the men, as he took a drag off his Lucky Strike, saying: “You know, you can’t never bury a good man.” Later as I grew older I came to understand the real meaning of what he said.

                                      ETERNAL FRIENDSHIP

                              No friend we love can ever die;
                              The outward form may disappear
I know that all my friends are nigh
Whenever I am moved to tears

And when my strength and hope are gone,
The friends, no more, than once I knew
Return to cheer and urge me on
Just as they always used to do

They whisper to me in the dark
Kind words of  counsel and of cheer
When hope has flicker to a spark
I feel their gentle spirit near

And Oh, because of them I strive
With all the strength that I can call
To keep their friendship still alive
And to be worthy of their all.

Death does not end our friendship true,
                                We all are debtors to the dead;
They, wait on everything we do

The splendid souls who’ve gone ahead
To them I hold that we are bound
By double pledges to be fine,

Who once has had a friend has
The link between mortal and divine.

Should any of Marcellas’s children ever ask him: “What have you done with with your life?” With assurance Marcellas could tell them:

                       “What have I done with my/your life/
and I tell them I have tried.”
When the heart weeps for what is lost, the spirit laughs for what ...
A week ago tonight I learned of the passing of my friend, Marcellas.
“You can’t bury a good man.”
